Kentauři byli nezkrotní a divocí tvorové, které se nikdo neodvážil osedlat a byla čest se na ně posadit. Někteří žili (byli chováni) při chrámech jako posvátné bytosti. V řeckém bájesloví byli synové thessalského krále Ixióna. Někteří vynikali pod vlivem vína násilnými činy.
